Once a business starts to grow, invitations arrive: panels, podcasts, award entries, conference slots. Saying yes to all of them can fill a calendar without moving the business forward. Choosing well starts with a simple question: who do you need to reach?

Start with the audience

Customers, investors, future employees and industry peers gather in different places. A niche trade podcast may matter far more to a business-to-business founder than a large general event. Map where your most important audiences already listen and read, and prioritize those stages.

Judge the room, not the reach

Large audiences are tempting, but relevance matters more. A small roundtable of the right decision-makers can be more valuable than a keynote to a crowd that will never buy from you. Ask organizers who attends and why before committing time.

Panels: bring a point of view

Panels reward speakers who say something specific. Prepare one or two clear opinions and a short story to illustrate each. Listen to the other speakers and respond to them; panels are conversations, and the most memorable contributors are rarely the ones reading prepared remarks.

Podcasts: prepare like an interview

Podcasts feel informal, but they are recorded, shared and searchable. Treat them like any media interview: know the host and audience, prepare your messages and stories, and assume everything is on the record. Ask in advance about the topics so you can bring useful detail.

Awards: tell a story

Award entries are judged on evidence and narrative. Choose categories where your work genuinely fits, explain the problem you solved and show the result clearly. If you win, the award is a reason to tell your story again to customers, staff and the press, not just a logo for the website.

Keep a simple scorecard

After each appearance, note what came of it: conversations, introductions, enquiries, follow-up invitations. Over time the pattern shows which stages are worth returning to, and which can be politely declined.
