Many launches are planned forwards: build the product, then think about how to announce it. The launches that get attention are usually planned the other way round. Fix the day the news goes public, and work backwards to everything that needs to be in place.
Start with the date
Choose a launch date that avoids obvious clashes, such as major holidays, big industry events where your news will be lost, or days when your team will be stretched. Once it is set, treat it as fixed. Moving dates late is one of the most common reasons media interest fades.
Lock the story first
Before anyone writes a release or designs a graphic, agree the core story: what is launching, who it is for, why it matters now and the two or three messages everyone will repeat. Every asset that follows should express the same story. Inconsistency on launch day confuses customers and reporters alike.
Build the assets
With the story agreed, prepare the announcement release, a short fact sheet, product images or a demo, founder photos, a frequently asked questions document and approved quotes. Make sure the website, product pages and social channels are ready to update at the same moment.
Brief the media in advance
Journalists need time. Share the story with selected reporters under an embargo agreed in writing, so they can prepare coverage to publish when the news breaks. Make spokespeople available for interviews in the days before, not just on the day itself.
Run the day like an event
On launch day, someone should own the timeline: when the website changes, when posts go out, when emails reach customers, who answers media questions. A simple shared schedule prevents the small slips that make a launch look disorganized.
Plan the week after
The days after a launch are when follow-up coverage, customer stories and reactions appear. Plan for them: additional interviews, a customer willing to speak, content that answers the questions people ask. A launch is not a single day; it is the start of a story you intend to keep telling.
