Every startup has things it is proud of. Very few of them are news. That is not a criticism; it is simply how editors decide what to cover. Understanding their filter before you pitch saves time on both sides and makes the stories you do pitch far more likely to land.

New, relevant, timely

Editors ask three quiet questions of every pitch. Is this genuinely new, or a variation on something they have seen many times? Is it relevant to their readers specifically, not just to your customers? And why should they run it now rather than next month? A strong story answers all three without being asked.

Milestones are not stories on their own

A new office, a new logo or a company anniversary matters a great deal internally. On their own, they rarely interest a reporter. They become stories when they reveal something larger: a shift in a market, a problem being solved in a new way, a trend that readers have noticed but not yet understood. The question to ask is what your milestone says about the world outside your company.

Look for tension and change

Good stories have movement in them. A small manufacturer bringing production back home, a founder building for a customer group that larger companies have ignored, a team solving a problem everyone in the industry complains about. Change and tension give a reporter something to explain, and explanation is what most business journalism is.

Connect to what readers already care about

The fastest route to relevance is a link to a conversation already happening. If your news speaks to a debate in your sector, a change customers are feeling or a question people are asking, say so clearly. Do not force the connection, but do not leave it for the reporter to find either.

Be honest about what you have

Some updates belong in a customer newsletter, a blog post or a social media announcement, not a press pitch. Recognizing that protects your credibility with journalists for the stories that really do matter. The founders who earn steady coverage are usually the ones reporters trust to call only when there is something worth hearing.
