Sam Bankman-Fried founded the crypto exchange FTX in 2019 and quickly became the industry’s most visible advocate for regulation and responsible growth. In November 2022, FTX collapsed within days amid revelations about its relationship with Bankman-Fried’s trading firm, Alameda Research.
The outcome
In November 2023 a jury convicted him on seven counts, including wire fraud and conspiracy, after prosecutors presented evidence that he directed the misuse of billions of dollars in customer funds. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. In June 2026, a federal appeals court reportedly upheld the conviction and sentence.
Lessons for founders
- For some companies, trust is the product. Exchanges, banks and platforms that hold other people’s money cannot separate reputation from operations.
- A public persona is not a control system. Advocating for good governance means nothing without governance inside the company.
- The bigger the platform, the faster the fall. Visibility that took years to build can disappear in a week.
The takeaway
FTX shows how completely a public image can diverge from what happens inside a company, and how quickly that gap is exposed once customers start asking for their money. The most credible reputation is one that would survive a look behind the curtain.
