Do Kwon co-founded Terraform Labs, the company behind the Terra blockchain and its algorithmic stablecoin, TerraUSD. He became one of crypto’s most visible founders, known for projecting total confidence in the system’s design and for a combative public style toward its critics.

The collapse

In May 2022, TerraUSD lost its peg to the dollar and the Terra ecosystem unraveled within days. The collapse wiped out about $40 billion in market value and hit retail investors around the world.

The outcome

After his arrest in Montenegro and extradition to the United States, Kwon pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud. In December 2025 a federal judge in New York sentenced him to 15 years in prison, more than the 12 years prosecutors had requested.

Lessons for founders

  • Certainty in public is not risk management in private. Confidence reassures people only until the moment it is tested.
  • How you treat critics becomes part of your story. Dismissing hard questions in public makes them harder to answer later.
  • Design for failure before you promise stability. Products sold on safety need honest explanations of what could go wrong.

The takeaway

Founders are expected to believe in what they build. Kwon’s story shows the difference between belief and assurance: one inspires people, the other is something you owe them.
